Glossary of Terms

Broadcloth Is a close plain-weave fabric made of cotton, rayon, or a blend of either cotton or rayon with polyester. It is used extensively in shirts and blouses, as well as home decorating.
Chintz Is a glazed cotton fabric of high-count plain weave, often printed. Often used for skirts and summer dresses.
Cotton Is the soft, fluffy fibers gathered from the seed pod of the cotton plant, or the cloth made from these fibers. First used by the people of India 5,000 years ago, cotton is considered to be one of the world's oldest fabrics. There are several grades of cotton which can be used for fabrics ranging from denim to voile. Cotton fabric feels good against the skin regardless of the temperature or the humidity and is therefore in great demand by the consumer.
Dobby Is a fabric featuring small geometrical woven designs in a repetitive fashion. Dobby is named after the attachment used on the loom to create the geometric woven design and offers a charming style for women's dresses and blouses.
Oxford Is made of soft, combed cotton yarns in a modified plain or basket weave of medium or heavy weight, and used primarily for shirting.
Polyester Is a medium weight manufactured fiber that is strong and can be found in many types of fabrics.
Poplin Is a medium to heavyweight, unbalanced, plain weave fabric with a fine horizontal rib effect on the surface because of a warp yarn finer than the filling yarn, and usually a high thread-count cloth. Poplin has a more pronounced rib than broadcloth and is used in high-quality shirting.
Rayon Is the first synthetic fiber produced from mostly cellulose, greatly resembles cotton in its chemical properties. Rayon is weakened by water and often shrinks after washing. It can be woven and knitted into many types of fabrics and used for many purposes.
Sateen Is a cotton fabric usually woven so that the surface is smooth and the finish lustrous, resembling satin.
Satin Was originally silk, but is now also made of filament man-made fibers with a highly lustrous surface and usually a dull back. Sometimes double-faced for use as ribbon.
Sheeting Is a plain-woven, carded yarn cloth in medium and heavy weights. Generally about the same number of yarns in warp as in filling, but often warp yarns are heavier than filling. Yarn sizes range from 10s to 30s.
Twill Is a popular fabric with a weave pattern identified by diagonal lines on the face of the fabric. It is an incredibly versatile fabric.
